Along with many of our ancestors, Tracy Thatcher Tarr's father, Fletcher Thatcher, Jr., graduated as a Freedom Ace in 1946. The school is no longer there.

Thanks to Russ Bickers for copies of these old postcards. Russ' Dyer ancestor is Susannah H.G. Dyer [1807-1896] who married William Trent [1796-1844], which makes Russ and Gordon 4th cousins, once removed.

Tracy Thatcher Tarr just told us what the H.G. stood for: Susannah "Her Grace" Dyar. It seems it was very common in the past to give this title to "certain" females.  Whether she was given this before or after her death we don't know yet.

More about this bridge

We had some interesting responses after creating this page.

From Nancy J. Skinner White:
I was very interested in the photo of the old Freedom Bridge over White River as my great grandfather George Edward Scott, born 1860 in Freedom, was one of the men who helped to build the wooden part of that bridge. He lived in the Freedom area all of his life. I have an oil painting of this old bridge in my home that my aunt had a local artist paint for my grandmother, Clara May Scott Skinner's birthday one year. I treasure it.
The old wooden part of the bridge no longer stands, but there is still a bridge there. I'm not sure if it's a completely new one or not. It's pretty close to being right downtown Freedom, if I remember correctly, and Freedom is not that big!

From Wayne Long:
My Dad grew-up in Freedom (Robert Long, born 1922).  My grandfather (Clay Long, born 1894) had many stories about Freedom since he often went there as a boy and lived there from the mid 1910s to mid 1930s.  He delivered the mail for the area, beginning his career in 1916 with a horse and buggy.

From Tracy Thatcher Tarr:
I can't wait for my father, Fletcher Thatcher, Jr., to see the picture of the school, since he graduated as a Freedom Ace in 1947. [Note: Tracy's great-great grandmother was Ruth Fiscus, and her great grandmother was Nancy Jane Mitchell, wife of King Solomon Dyar.]

From April Westcott:
I also have family from Freedom, Indiana. My great-grandfather was of the Myers-Fiscus line. He was born in Freedom and just passed away this year at 95 years old. He used to tell stories of all of the small schools and churches in and around Owen County. I have found in my research that the Fiscus line intermingles with almost every other family from the area. Almost everyone seems to have a Fiscus in their line somewhere. Great seeing your postcards.

Now Playing: Back Home Again in Indiana
I have always been a wand'rer
Over land and sea
Yet a moonbeam on the water
Casts a spell o'er me
A vision fair I see
Again I seem to be
                                Back home again in Indiana
And it seems that I can see
The gleaming candlelight still shining bright
                                Through the sycamores for me
The new mown hay sends all its fragrance
From fields I used to roam
When I dream about the moonlight
on the Wabash
Then I long for my Indiana home
Fancy paints on mem'ry's canvas
Scenes that we hold dear
We recall them in days after
Clearly they appear
And often times I see
A scene that's dear to me
Back home again in Indiana
And it seems that I can see
The gleaming candlelight still shining bright
Through the sycamores for me
The new mown hay sends all its fragrance
From fields I used to roam
When I dream about the moonlight
on the Wabash
Then I long for my Indiana home
