Kimberli was born at Alachua General Hospital in Gainesville,
Florida. The first time I ever held her in my arms, the radio played "You
Are My Special Angel," and she has been my special angel ever since.
We lived in campus housing at the University of Florida at the time. It was called Flavet, for Florida Veterans. It was right after the Korean War and they had moved some old army barracks onto campus to house the hordes of veterans like Kimberli's dad, Hal, who were going back to school on the G.I. Bill. The rent was something like $26 a month and the waiting list was long. We were thrilled to get in. It was a fun time of life. Everyone was equally poor, married, and either had children or were just starting their families. It never occurred to us to wait until after graduation to have a baby. No child was ever wanted more than our special angel, Kimberli.
I could write a whole book about Kimberli alone. She is a gifted musician, singer and songwriter, but she has many other talents. Her instrument of choice growing up was the euphonium but she can play almost anything. She is an environmental activist who has made a significant difference. She is a talented writer and wrote a weekly column for the Tampa Tribune at one time.
