A  POWERFUL  PEACE

AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE WHOLE WORLD
TO AFFIRM A COMMON HOPE FOR THE FUTURE
At this point in the human adventure we are connected globally -- by phone, fax, TV and Internet, in a way never imagined possible a few years ago.

These connections have made us more aware of our common hopes and beliefs -- as well as our differences.

We can now have a great future -- a new millennium of hope -- by coming together in heart and mind for a purpose all can support; a purpose that will leave room for our differences.

Earth Day, the March 20-21 Equinox, provides a profound opportunity to affirm our common hope for the future and to motivate its implementation. Earth Day has given birth to an Earth Trustee vision and agenda. All can now think and act as trustees of Earth, seeking in their own way to:

"Eliminate poverty, pollution and violence by personal choices and institutional policies in ecology, economics and ethics that will eliminate poverty, pollution and violence, awaken the wonder of life and nurture people and planet."

Earth Day is the day of nature's equipoise when night and day are equal and the seasons change. On that day at the moment of equinox (19:55 UT, 2:55 p.m. EST - USA) the Peace Bell at the United Nations in New York will ring. Simultaneously the Peace Bell at the UN Center in Vienna will ring.

The Mir space Station will observe this event. They now have an Earth Flag and a special copy of the original International Earth Day Proclamation, which was signed by UN Sec. Gen. U Thant, Astronaut Buzz Aldrin and other world leaders. It obtained global attention when it was issued in 1971. Signature's added since then include Yasir Arafat, Yehudi Menuhin and Cosmonaut Anatoly Berezevoi.

Iran and Iraq observe their New Year (Norouz) on this same day and are joining in the Earth Day observance. The United Nations Mission of Iran states: "In observing Norouz on the first day of Spring, many seek to be at home with their families and God. It is a special time for a clean orderly house, with special attention to the care of animals and plants -- and good relations with neighbors. It is a time to set aside all hostilities and to pay all debts...In this context, the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations supports and participates in the Earth Day celebration."

The moment of the March Equinox is a time for global, heartfelt commitment and dedication to think and act as Trustees of Earth. Signalled by the ringing of Peace Bells on radio, TV and Internet there can be a profound sense of connection with the whole human family and our common destiny here on Earth. This will appeal to every creed and culture.

Our task is to get attention and where possible live coverage by radio, TV and Internet and foster a new hope for the future. We have the raw materials, natural resources -- and now the technology to provide a future where everyone will benefit. All that is needed is to spread the word to every creed and culture, "We can all now think and act as trustees of Earth and rejuvenate our planet."
